What Do Children Under The Age Of 7 Look For In A Book?

What Do Children Under The Age Of 7 Look For In A Book?

The young child picked up her book, sat down and opened it. Seconds later she was completely absorbed and in a world of her own, so much so that her mother had to tap her gently on the shoulder to get the little girl’s attention when the meal was ready. But what was it that captured her interest and kept her mind focused on her reading? How did the author engage and keep her attention so effectively?

As adults, we all look for books to motivate and inspire young children, perhaps with a strong moral message or an inspirational character. But what are the young children themselves looking for?

In my experience, having taught children within this age range, the first and foremost thing to inspire a child to have an interest in a book is most definitely the cover. The saying ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ is redundant when talking about children’s choices. Their first impression of a book will generally be based on its cover. If the pictures on the front of the book are recognisable, bright and interesting then that will encourage a child to pick it up. If not, then the book is almost directly rejected!

Once the cover has been explored, immediately the child opens the book, focussing on the pictures, almost ignoring the text entirely. For the children that I have taught, the text is secondary to the pictures in telling the story. For a real treat children love the interactive books. Flaps, slides, moving parts and accompanying soft toy characters are always engaging and inspire the children to find out what the text is all about.

The books that children always seem to enjoy have real characters that they can identify with. Young children are always interested in other children, this always makes a text accessible for a child and books featuring a variety of races and cultures are always a hit!

What is the easiest way to break into publishing children's books?
I'm starting to write and illustrate my own original children's books, and haven't the foggiest how to break into getting them printed up and published… any pointers?

I am actualy employed by an isralie jew. He has nothing against anyone except palistinians. And he aknowleged that the reason for that is because of the localised fighting for many years.

I am going to visit Isreal in the fall and he has told me many times that it is nothing like the media reports. It is not that bad in Israel.

I also spent time in the Army, And have seen conflict, my father recorded news reports while i was in the service, and the reports was NOTHING like what was reported.

Our media is Paid. The BUSH Admin has been caught 2 seperate times to the tune of 2.2million bucks for fake news releases.

Politicians buy the news for political gain.

If you the people have any sense at all, answer this question.

Why would you spend 30 to 80 million dollars to run for president when the pay in only 1.6 million per term????

We either have the dumbest politicians on earth or they are corrupt!

    WAKE UP AMERICA!

I can see that you're very informed of what's going on in your country. Most Americans are totally mis-informed about their own history, not just Iran's'. I'm sure that many folks here on YA won't even read what you put up here in your ques. I'm afraid that our President is making plans for world domination, and the Middle East is square 1. I know that what you say and feel about Iran is true, but the media here are not gonna tell the truth anytime soon ! Anyone with a true sense of history, would understand the many contributions of Arabs throughout history, were important for the development of civilization. Don't judge Americans by what the govt. does or says. We're trapped in this, just as much as you !

Wow! I couldn't have said it better myself. Very informative. But you know that people are people, and some must undermine others in order to justify their own agenda and prejudices. If they can't find facts, they will simply make them up. But you know what ? Their lies and miss-statements always catch up to them eventually. But then they start to make up more, so it is a vicious cycle.

Just forgive them for their ignorance, do the best you can in life and keep in mind that at least you (and many other educated people) know better.

Your article was very informative, thank you.
As you may know the media tend to exaggerate on everything(sensationalism sells).
Obviously I can only answer for myself but I believe it is common knowledge in the US.about Iran being a very civilized country, and the people of Iran being very educated.
There are exceptions to the rule, anywhere.
    Wish you well

Very good informative article with a lot of research.
    Thank You.

Reading the responses above I can see there are a bunch of Knuckleheads that don't even want to try to educate themselves.

I think everyone in the world knows what the U. S. oil Barron's are after in Iran……..oil.

It's a good review – the only thing I'd say is that I give very little weight to reviews which say "this book is completely perfect." No book is completely perfect. Come on, wasn't there _anything_ which you thought "huh?" about? No time you thought, "so why isn't he/she saying/doing x?" No time you thought, "I wish that had been explained in a bit more detail"? No time you thought, "okay, I get it, now get on with the story already"?

You're a reviewer. Picking imperfections is your _job_. Saying "I couldn’t pick an imperfection if I tried" gives the strong impression that you set out to only say positive things.

    Ahmadinejad, is that you?!?! ;-)
I've been saying that Iran isn't a threat to anyone. The leadership is just frustrated at being threatened and insulted by CEO Bush with his eyes on Iran's oil. Also, the Palestinians being pushed onto smaller and smaller slivers of land without anybody speaking up for them is maddening! The difference between Zionists and Nazis is that Zionists don't use gas to exterminate their civilian victims…..
Good luck trying to convince these fascists that Iranians are human. They're completely brainwashed. After no WMDs in Iraq, they now believe the lie that Iran has nukes. Hopefully, your govt. understands that Bush WANTS them to build nukes! He and his friends profit from arms races. The best way to get revenge on Bush is to not build nukes.

Hope you have not been working on Sunday.
"Do not make a sculpted image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above…" Hope you never made a bird in art class or a turtle carving for your home and gardens club. If your children have, then I suggest you tell them that they have made Satan happy. Don't want those sins to add up.
In other words, don't quote the Bible for the messages that you didn't insert will come back to bite you later!

The Harry Potter series is not to be blamed for this. It just proves that parents have not given their children the proper teachings. If HP did not exist, then there would be letters like this speaking out against Bugs Bunny and how he influences children smack while eating carrots. If your child does not know the difference between fantasy and reality, then you as a parent have not done your duties. Besides if television must raise a child, I'd rather J.K. Rowling do it than most of those other things out there. As a child I knew that if I hit someone, that they'd feel pain, and that guns caused people to die. It's the people that tell their children that grandma was tired and needed some rest, that raise the murderers and pagans. Tell your children from the beginning, "this is not real, Daniel Radcliffe is a real boy over in europe" etc. and sit down with them while watching the making of the movie. If the parents don't take responsibility for not even being there while their child is watching television and explaining what it is that they see, then the creator of that show/movie is not to blame for the lack of guidance. In this case all television is evil. "don't watch the weather channel Tommy, because they claim to forsee the weather, that's evil" "don't watch Barney Jenny, because dinosaurs are extinct and he is not truly who he claims to be". YOU have to draw the line somewhere, if not, then your child will have the Santa Clause complex for someone not so "merry".

    1. We know you're different than Iraqis
    2. Glad to hear there is freedom
    3. Especially for the women
    4. So no-one is getting stoned? (and I don't mean "high")
    5. The media is a mess – we hate them too.
    6. I had friends from Iran in college and I know they are good, smart decent people.
    7. I think your president is as crazy as ours is.
    8. If an American tried to come live in Iran, what would happen? (I am seriously asking. I had a friend who had escaped Iran at 14 and he said I could never go there because of my blonde hair and blue eyes.)
    9. I am American and I truly think Iranians in Iran hate me.
    10. Oh no, please don't let the Christians in. There will be hoards of fundies on your doorstep wanting to "save" you. :(
    11. Are you the government of Iran trying to trick me? Or even my own government trying to trick me?
    12. The phrase "pulling your/my leg" means to joke on someone. For instance, if I told you elephants could fly, I'd be pulling your leg. :)
    13. I think over 80% of Americans now want the war in Iraq to end. Do Iraqis hate you? Is there any way your country and your people could help stabilize that region?
    14. I personally can't wait for Bush to be out of office. When will your president be voted out?
    15. What will you do if a woman is elected as the next U.S. president? Will Muslim governments refuse to deal with her?
    16. How can we as civilized people (I mean you and me and our countrymen/women) convince the fundamentalists to STOP blowing things and people (and children) up? This was going on long before the war and is really really sad. :(

Thanks for your essay. It was informative. :)

P.S. Do you have charities like we do to help the poor or help people after disasters and such?
