Help answer the question about books for children
How do I get my books for children published?I’m new in the writers’ arena and I have written some children’s books. I would like to know if they are good enough to publish. I’ve had several people look at them and like them a lot. I also have another couple good ideas for more. What is the best way to get started in getting published? Also I have not had them illustrated. Should I leave that up to the publisher or get one myself? Are illustrators paid a straight fee or a percentage? Are literary agents worth the time? I’m a blank slate; pass me some knowledge and experience.

I’ll tell you the effects of letting children believe in fairytales and magic… it allows them to be children and have fun. For goodness sake Dawkins I agree with you on a lot of things but we’re talking about innocent children’s fun for crying out loud, kids have about 10 or so years of their life before they realise how fucked up the world is and what life is really like… they have every right to enjoy magic, myths, fairytales and a make believe world if it gives them fun and happiness.

Once again the media is forcing this kind of controversial image of Dawkins. Not once in this interview did he “tackle Harry Potter”, he merely said he would like to write a children’s book promoting science and critical thinking. Nor did he say that fiction is wrong, which some posters here somehow seem to have heard..
Furthermore, he is neither a geneticist nor an “evangelical atheist”. I don´t want to seem like a fanboy, but the damn dude just always says things I happen to agree with.

When did he say people believe harry potter is real?

Cussing and smoking. My very bad habits. Everytime I say a cuss word my kids, ages 7 and 10, start yeling at me that it's a bad word I can't say. I'm trying to quit smoking and hope they won't start whn they are older.

Jimmy Carter. But he was laughed at and called a wimp for being honest and not bullying. In this world, nice guys just can't win for losing!

I think it should not be taught until puberty BUT what people are not realizing is that puberty is not starting in the way it did when we were kids aged 13 and up but much younger. It is becoming more and more common for puberty to start in girls as young as 9.
We have got to get away from the chronological age hang up we have and be practical. We can no longer bury our heads in the sand. We are seeing younger and younger mothers because they had no sex education. We keep hearing that it should be left to the parents but they have the same age hang ups, " oh my baby is too young for that". We cannot act like an ostrich and don't contemplate it.
I was blessed my late mother taught me early so I was able to know fact from myth and was prepared for body changes, hormonal swings, sexual urges etc. Hell, I was still the baby until the day she died. My aunt still calls me the baby when she is with my dad ( I'm 39). The ingrained mentality of a parent to just think of age, not maturity, will hamper our kids.
You have parents out there that don't even want to talk to their kids about not smoking much less about sex.
We can't wait til high school, for some that will be way too late.
Morals teaching is best left to the parent but morals teaching should start from an early age.
I teach my son right from wrong and he is almost 4. He won't know about sex education until later but I have to start watching for body changes, not quite yet of course but once that happens, got to sit down with him .
Kids tell kids all the stupid things like, " you can't get pregnant doing it the first time" yadda yadda yadda. Now there is a golden oldie. I heard that one when I was growing up, my friends' kids have heard it.

(suite) i understand your point of view is but let it be taken slowly cause not all poeple are the same level of consciousness and killing their fary tale is the equivalent of killing their saoul, and by personal experience it is worst killing one in a what you call saoul than a physical killing

It doesn’t even make sense, and almost seems like a poorly edited moment, in hindsight. Why would he say “I don’t know what to think of magic.” It’s allegorical, it’s fantastical, it’s outside of rational thinking and in a realm of exploration. Does he not dream? Even if we knew exactly what dreams were, it wouldn’t change their effect. Reading a good fantasy novel is a way to stretch the brain, just like a good joint. It sounds like Dick just needs to let loose.

There is absolutely no sound scientific explanation about how life began. Not one. There is also no scientific explanation of how a god could exist. So why not teach both?
When I was an Atheist I was stunned by how arrogant we have become as a species. We arrogantly claim to know how life began, yet we actually have no valid theory to explain how life, Earth, and the universe began (Big Bang theory doesn't explain how it started, rather the formation of the universe AFTER the beginning of the universe).
The problem with teaching creationism isn't that it's false, rather that people's religions interfere with the lesson and make the lessons become more emotional than factual. It also tip toes around the seperation of church and state if you are in a public school.

Thank you for this question. I need to give it more thought.
Currently, I have my children apologize when they wrong someone else, not when they do something disobedient. I have them say. "I'm sorry" even if they don't mean it because I am trying to reinforce the reality that they hurt someone.

There is a part in the book where Scout says:
"Jem and I found our father satisfactory: he played with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment."
He wanted his children to grow up doing their own thing, and learning on their own.
Through the trial of Tom Robinson, he wanted to show them that there is no difference based on race, and that the truth is that one should stand up for their own belief, and follow through.
He wanted to raise his children the right way without trying.
He wanted to see if they could figure it all out for themselves.
Also the entire book can be summed up in:
atticus: "I'd rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (look for rest of quote around page 90)
It is a metaphor because bluejays are considered annoying, mockingbirds sing beautifully, and don't eat crops. Atticus is saying to not do any harm to anyone unless it is worth it.

I agree. I thought it was totally absurd that he used the phrase “brought up to believe” concerning Harry Potter and mythical fantasy books. Religion is taught to children as being true. They are told this is how the world works. Harry Potter is taught as being entertainment. They are brought up to believe it is not true. No adverse effect. Kind of like how Dawkins advocates teaching the Bible in schools (as fiction) to understand allusions in Western literature.

I don't know if it should be punishable by law, but it certainly should be discouraged and frowned upon.

I teach my daughter to accept everyone- young or old, regardless of race, nationality, orientation, etc.
I do, however, teach her that she doesn't have to put up with bullies, people who make fun of others and people who try to get her to do stupid things.
I guess THAT is prejudice, too, but I don't care.

I tell my kids if someone hits them tell them STOP really loud. If they don't then it's OK to hit back as a form of self defense. NO WAY is my kid getting hit because he is scared to defend himself. I was raised that hitting is wrong and you don't hit back even if someone is hitting you. I think that's a terrible way to set up a victim child…. let them learn later on in life to turn the other cheek but not in grade school.
I am applying the principle used for police when making an arrest… they are supposed to warn STOP POLICE before shooting… and if the perp doesn't they may use force.
My kids were 2 and 4 when we discussed this last.

If it means I don’t have to hear another word about Harry Fucking Potter or Lord of the Rings then I’m all for it.
