The thing is, it's not just reading one book. It's reading multiple books, and ones that challenge you, as well as articles and essays. You'll see words that you might not be completely familiar with, but you'll see them in context. You may or may not pick up their exact meaning from the context (usually will), but if you don't, you might look it up, just to see. And then once you've learned a new word, you may go out of your way to use it in a sentence of your own, just to try it out or to make sure you can use it right. Or you may just keep it in the back of your head, and it'll pop out when it's the right word for the moment. Usually people have a combination of the two.

But again, the benefit comes from regular reading. Consider this: if you read one book, and only learn two words, you haven't really expanded your vocabulary all that much. But if you read one book a week, and learn two words from each one, by the end of the year you'll have learned 104 new words. And with each new word, you develop new ways of expressing yourself more clearly. Your speech becomes more well-rounded and you have the ability to be more precise.

Another benefit of regular reading, assuming again that you're reading books on or above your current reading level: you'll use better grammar and spell better. It's a natural side effect, since you'll see the correct (or purposefully used incorrect) ways to do things, and eventually your brain will kick in and you'll remember them, and start to exhibit them. It's a really neat psychology thing.

I'm sorry that I don't know much about history books, but from my experience reading more doesn't help too much on reading skills. It may help vocabulary, but for reading skills there are some techniques that you can learn from other courses.

You can try to look for some speed reading courses which include comprehension and vocabulary training. It teaches you how to absorb information faster as you read, and this is actually the formal way to improve reading skills. I learned it a few months ago, and now I'm doing much better in my study. It saved me quite a lot of time spent on reading as well (I'm a college student).

I can recommend the course that I've used for your reference too. It includes reading speed, comprehension, and vocabulary training. I chose it at that time because it has quite a lot of good user feedback, and it is affordable. There is also a website which tells how to get the most out of it, and it guides me to choose the online version of the course. I put the links here for you to check them yourself:

Learning vocabulary, or anything really for that matter, comes in four stages or levels.

Unconscious Incompetence – You don't know and you don't know you don't know

Conscious Incompetence – You don't know and you are aware you don't know (learning something e.g. your example of reading to learn words)

Conscious Competence – You have the technique, and skill, however it is not yet habitual or natural. (practice e.g. now you have picked up some words from reading you are actively trying to fit them in to conversation)

Unconscious Competence – The skill, or habit, is automatic and you no longer need to think about it. (e.g. you automatically, from reading and conversing, do not need to think about the correct word, context, or form of language you use. The most appropriate words will come naturally to you and without thought).

Through reading alone you will find that your vocabulary will improve, however, if you actively try to practice fitting in to a coversation vocabulary that you have read, and understand in context, from various books it will allow for an acceleration of this process and, thus, you will become articulate with great haste.

You can increase your score greatly if you do some preparation. From my experience, the best preparation books were the princeton review guide, and the tutorfox new sat guide. Used together, I increased my SAT score by about 200 points. Good luck, and please let me know if you have any more questions.

    Regards,
    Pual.

CollegeBoard makes a book called "The Official SAT Study Guide". Its a blue book. They put some information on the test in there. Also, it has 8 practice tests. These tests are made by the same people who will make your test on the actual day, which is why these tests are so helpful. For vocabulary, I definitely recommend the Vocabulary Cartoons books. They seem childish, but I have a terrible memory, yet I remember almost every word in there. They have two version, each with about 300 different words. So if you use them both thats about 600 words. The great thing about these is that they come up with catchy phrases with the words and it really helps you remember the words. They use cartoons with the phrase so you can think of the small drawings as well. It really does help you retain those words. 101 on the PSAT is really bad. Definitely study. I would recommend you take care of other stuff before vocab first since vocab is only 19 questions out of 170 on teh whole test.

i know what your talking bout. i started reading cuz i spoke unclear and mumbled. it does help it really does. the fact that your identifying words is a really good thing. you will get the gist of it and enjoy your stories dont worry.
    good luck!

  12. lilly Says:

How about you try slowing down? Try and figure out what the words you understand mean. Take a little while to do that and if you still can't figure them out, ask someone or go on.

Here's the thing. The story will still be there when you finish figuring out what the words mean! Don't be in a rush. You'll only enjoy the book more if you understand it!

    Hope this helps.

I recommend you to read Spanish literature from the Golden Century on. Authors before those times, are very difficult to understand, even to Spanish speakers. Cervantes and other authors of the Golden Century are easier (but, be prepared to find some ancient words and grammar nowadays obsolete).
Avoid Baroque authors as Gongora or Calderón, they are very difficult.
Classic and Romantic writers as Larra, Perez Galdos, Zorrilla, are usually considered exemples of good Spanish.

Also, you can try authors as Garcia Lorca, but he used many Andalucian words, that are not common in other Spanish regions.
LAtinoamerican poetry from Ruben Dario, Pablo Neruda, Cesar Vallejo. Short stories from Cortazar, Julio Ramon Ribeiro and Jorge Luis Borges. Novels: Garcia Marquez and Mario Vargas Llosa.
